On 14th March 1982, Metallica played their first show and performed their cover of Diamond Head’s ‘Am I Evil?’ for the first time. The song was later recorded by Metallica and released on the B-side of their Creeping Death 12” single, along with Blitzkrieg by Blitzkrieg in October 1984.
Metallica’s version of ‘Am I Evil?’ includes a short intro that Diamond Head only ever played live and was not on any of the recorded versions. Lars must have remembered it from a show and decided to use it in Metallica’s version. Or, maybe he even had a cassette of Diamond Head live?
As of today, Metallica have performed ‘Am I Evil?’ live seven hundred and sixty times, and the song has appeared on at least eighteen official Metallica releases, including:
· Cliff Em All- DVD
· The Good, the Bad and the Live Collection.
· Wherever I May Roam – Single
